The Kern River in the Southern Sierra spilled over its banks Friday, flooding nearby communities, including parts of Kernville, a town about 50 miles northeast of Bakersfield. PG&E said it hopes to have most customers with their lights back on by Friday evening, though it may take longer to restore power to some. PG&E said damage to electric transmission lines was the primary reason for the outages and that damages to distribution poles, power lines and other equipment were also contributing factors. "Transmission and local distribution crews and contractors are supporting restoration efforts, with 17 4-man crews working in Monterey County alone," the utility company said in an emailed statement.
